SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY

Jeremy Seigal, Chief Executive, AS Watson

In 1992, Jeremy Seigal and co-founder Philip Newton opened their first The Perfume Shop store in Guildford.

The first store saw the launch of a new UK retail format, which sought to make fragrance an accessible purchase for consumers and removed the intimidation inherent in traditional department store perfume buying. The concept - putting the customer first - seemed simple enough but it revolutionised fragrance retail and propelled The Perfume Shop to become the largest and most successful specialist fragrance retailer in the UK.

Today The Perfume Shop has 170 stores in the UK and the Republic of Ireland (which trade under the name Perfume Direct). With unbroken year on year like-for-like sales increases and a steady and impressive profit growth, the business has gone from strength to strength.

In August 2005, The Perfume Shop was acquired by A.S.Watson, wholly owned subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa. The Perfume Shop is now part of A.S. Watson’s Luxury Division alongside the European chains Marionnaud and ICI Paris XL.

AS Watson Group recently promoted Jeremy Seigal to Chief Executive of its 1,300- strong UK retail arm, which includes Superdrug, Savers, and The Perfume Shop.

Jeremy has worked in the retail industry for over 20 years and has a detailed and impressive knowledge of its intricacies and challenges.

Roja Dove, Professeur de Parfums, Roja Dove

Roja Dove is not rare. Roja Dove is unique. Roja is the world’s sole
“Professeur de Parfums”. There are celebrated noses in this multi-billion international business; there are small pools of astonishing creativity in what has become a corporate, highest of high tech, but anyone who asks for real knowledge - for a sorcerer’s grasp of what really happens in the perfumery industry is always, always referred to Roja Dove.

Roja’s comments and his great expertise are quoted in relation to nearly every manufacturer of fragrance in the world, whilst his anecdotes keep world-wide audiences on a rollercoaster of laughter, astonishment and fascination. Roja knows the rules of perfumery, he knows the rules of business and he knows what the market has done, is doing and will be doing next year.

Throughout his years in perfumery, and his constant travelling and lecturing, Dove has become the connoisseurs’ connoisseur. Roja continues to travel and shares his passion of the mysteries of perfume, whilst working with all the top names the industry has to offer. Whether Dove is making his audiences giggle with a risqué description of Schiaperelli’s Shocking (“like the interior of ladies’ underwear”) or its new imitator Westwood’s Boudoir (“like Shocking but without the knickers”) the
phrase which probably sums him up best is simple: “his passion is contagious”.

Keith Lockyer, Managing Director Sampling Innovations

Keith Lockyer joined the family firm in 1999, having completed a management degree and gaining valuable sales and agency experience over several years. He worked in a variety of roles within the media radio sales industry, handling a nationwide range of radio station clients working with London media agencies on FMCG brands, developing a broad range of brand campaigns, launches and initiatives.

Keith was appointed MD of Sampling Innovations in 2005 and has been instrumental in developing and growing the business to bring clients that special brand of alchemy: changing the ordinary into something special. The Sampling Innovations ‘brand alchemy’ covers five key elements:
Promotional Sampling Consultancy: maximising results from sampling campaigns
Sample Production: expert advice on the largest range of sampling formats
Innovative Retail Products for Trial and Travel: scaling down full size products into smaller versions

Retail NPD: creation of unique product formats for retail.

This was followed by two years with Booz Allen Hamilton as a Management Consultant.

In 1980 Jean-Pierre Houri joined Naarden International as Managing Director for France Flavours and Fragrances. After the acquisition of Naarden by Unilever, he became responsible for Quest’s total operations in France, with the prime task of merging the PPF and the Naarden organisations. The new group has now two arms: the US based Research Institute for Fragrance Materials and the Brussels based Communication group. Jean-Pierre is proud to represent an industry which makes products that bring pleasure and beauty into people’s lives.

Under Jean-Pierre’s jurisdiction, the Fragrance Division of Quest International grew in stature within the fragrance industry, creating fine fragrances for prestige brands and leading fashion and film icons. It was his personal touch which inspired the perfumers working in Quest and the development of several unique consumer understanding tools. Throughout his career Jean-Pierre’s olfactory gifts have been highly valued and despite the pressures of running major international organisations, he has delighted in spending time in perfumery. A free spirit and intellectual thinker, Jean-Pierre is a creative perfumery champion.
